    Collapse overview
Dr. Mary Ann McBurnie designs, implements, coordinates, and performs analysis for multi-center epidemiologic studies and clinical trials.

Dr. McBurnie recently served as principal investigator on a multi-center study to establish the infrastructure for comparative effectiveness research (CER) in community health centers, the Community Health Applied Research Network (CHARN). Dr. McBurnie led the CHARN Central Data Management Coordination Center as well as the Data Coordinating Center for CONCERT, the COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) Outcomes-based Network for Clinical Effectiveness and Research Translation.

She is collaborating with Dr. Brian Hazlehurst to develop, implement, and evaluate natural language processing methodologies to augment information obtained from coded electronic medical records. In addition, she provides scientific and statistical leadership for projects involving asthma, COPD, quality of care, obesity and nutrition.

Dr. McBurnie has served on several national and international studies that relate to heart and lung disease. She also directed the Public Access Defibrillation Trial, which demonstrated that lay volunteers could use automated external defibrillators (AEDs) safely and effectively to increase survival after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. Another project, the Research Outcomes Consortium (funded by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute), evaluated field interventions for trauma and cardiac arrest and translated results to out-of-hospital practice.

Dr. McBurnie received her PhD in biostatistics from the University of Washington. She served in that department at the Cardiovascular Health Study Coordinating Center and the Clinical Trial Center before joining the Center for Health Research in 2005.

PMC Citations indicate the number of times the publication was cited by articles in PubMed Central, and the Altmetric score represents citations in news articles and social media. (Note that publications are often cited in additional ways that are not shown here.) Fields are based on how the National Library of Medicine (NLM) classifies the publication's journal and might not represent the specific topic of the publication. Translation tags are based on the publication type and the MeSH terms NLM assigns to the publication. Some publications (especially newer ones and publications not in PubMed) might not yet be assigned Field or Translation tags.) Click a Field or Translation tag to filter the publications.
