    Collapse overview
Dr. David Smith's research focuses on the economic evaluation of medical interventions and the natural history and burden of disease. He is involved in studies analyzing prescribing behavior, medication adherence, drug use and outcomes, and FDA-funded studies on drug safety.

Along with other investigators at CHR, Dr. Smith undertakes the development of prognostic risk scores; together they have developed risk scores in several clinical areas, including prediction of renal dialysis, poor outcomes in heart failure, and Clostridium difficile infection. He has a special research interest in cardiovascular and renal epidemiology.

Dr. Smith received his pharmacy degree from the University of Washington. After completing his residency in general/clinical pharmacy, he worked as a clinical pharmacist in home care. He received an MHA in health services administration and a PhD in pharmacy outcomes research from the University of Washington, and was a postdoctoral fellow at the Centre for Health Economics at University of York (UK). He is adjunct faculty at the University of Washington's School of Pharmacy and the Oregon State University College of Pharmacy.
